It was July 2014, I was auditing a textile business at Byculla, Mumbai when the owner shared with me multiple newspaper cuttings which ingrained my thoughts on giving.
The multiple newspaper cuttings showcased charities worth billions by billionaires like Azim Premji, Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, etc.
The owner, used to supply raw materials to Reliance (Vimal in early days) & who had a repo with Dhirubhai Ambani; wanted to build a perspective in me that you should always give back to society.
Since then, I’ve been actively doing my fair share of contributing to the good.
I intend to pass this baton to all the people connected with me.
I think everyone who is making money, irrespective of their incomes should donate certain % of income.
You can start small. Though you must start. Rather than the quantum of donation, it’s the intention that matters.
I too started small.
Few years back, I decided to donate 1% of my net income every year.
Every year, I increase this donation criteria by 1%.
Year 1- 1%, Year 2- 2%, Year 3- 3%.. Year 5- 5% of income as donation and so on.
The idea is to give back to the society from where you make your living.
I think, if everyone does their fair share of donations; the world would be a better place to live in.
You can donate in money, time, community services, knowledge, etc.
There’s too much we can contribute together.
For the practical people, who say what I’ll get when I give? Firstly, give unconditionally. Secondly, do good & good will come back to you. Good deeds always comes back to you. It’s a full circle.
Be grateful for what you have. Be generous.
The biggest pleasures are in genuinely giving. Learn the art of giving.
